Do we need to remove wisdom teeth?

Wisdom teeth, long thought about by anthropologists as an evolutionary answer for our ancestor’s early diet of rough food, is now classified as a vestigial organ, or body parts which have lost their original functions.

Today, wisdom teeth are often treated as four hidden teeth located at the outermost area of the gums, which erupts during the adolescent years, and may affect other teeth due to its position and nature. Since there is normally not enough room for wisdom teeth in our jaws or gums, wisdom teeth usually emerges at awkward angles, which leads to damage to its neighboring teeth, gums, and even the mouth walls.

Because of this, dental professionals often recommend removing the wisdom teeth long before it causes any significant trouble in the mouth — the earlier, the better. This is due to the human body’s capacity to heal its wounds a lot better at younger ages.

This begs the question — should I remove my wisdom teeth?

There are certain edge cases where wisdom teeth may not be removed. These include certain times when the wisdom teeth has fully erupted, and is properly located within the gums, and does not get in the way of other teeth and the jaws. If there are no signs of tooth decay or bleeding or swollen gums around it, it’s should be fine. However, more often than not — most of the time, even — your dentists will recommend extracting the wisdom teeth, due to a number of factors. Here are some of them:

Gum inflammation.

The impacted teeth may cause the gums around it to become swollen, which may eventually lead to bleeding.

Soft gums.

Gums should ideally be firm to the touch. Impacted wisdom teeth often infect the gums, making it soft and susceptible to gingivitis.

Pain.

There’s no denying that pain is a common contributor to the trouble behind impacted wisdom teeth. This could be tooth aches, or even pain along the mouth’s linings, or the gums.

No full eruption.

If the wisdom teeth did not fully emerge, it will most likely accumulate bacteria and plaque.  And due to its partial eruption, it may be difficult to clean it via normal methods on a daily basis.

Hidden teeth under the gums.

This may cause the formation of a cyst, which affects the roots of its neighbors.

If you regularly visit the dentist and have check-ups and X-Rays often, there is no worry about immediately removing the wisdom teeth if the dental practitioner deems it fine. However, at the sign of any possible problem, preemptive operations to extract the teeth will be your best bet.
